The colors we use in our home reflect our individual personalities. Colors affect our everyday lives, and even if you’re color blind, the ambiance created by the colors around you can influence mood, productivity, health, and happiness. Many researchers have even assigned personality traits to each color, or to the people who chose them as favorites or who revile them as the least interesting colors of the spectrum.

At home, you want to be comfortable with your color choices and you want the home colors to reflect your personality. Are you a red or a peach person? Do you prefer violet or green? Check out the clothes in your closet, the posters on your wall, the pillows on the sofa, and the large pieces of furniture, as well as the walls, cupboards, and carpets that surround you.

Look around your home. Do you find the same color used repeatedly throughout? Does white or beige dominate with a few accent colors? What you do and think and feel about color also influences how comfortably and happily you’ll be at home and whether you’ll feel like relaxing and reading, sleeping, eating, talking, or working out on the exercise bike.

Choosing interior colors is not easy in today’s market. There are many paint manufacturers and thousands of colors. So, how do you start? Look at the room you want to paint. Is there a predominate fabric on the furniture? Or maybe a favorite piece of artwork. If so, go with shades of the predominate color.

If not, look around the room. Is it facing East? Rooms that face east should have a neutral color since the sunlight will make the room brighter than the color you intended.

Is the room small? To make the room appear larger, use one light color. Is the room too large? Use deeper, darker and bolder colors. A low ceiling? To raise the ceiling use white or light pastel colors. A high ceiling? Warm and dark colors will bring the ceiling down to the proper level.

All of these options will help in the color decision, but the use of the room is equally important. Is it the Dining Room? Bedroom? Kitchen? Do you do a lot of entertaining? Parties? Family gatherings? Some colors work best in certain rooms while others should be avoided.

Green is a relaxing color and can be used in most room except for the dining room since green with food indicates spoilage. An orange hallway is warm and welcoming to guests. Pink bathroom? You might think it’s for little girls, but pink has been known to be a relaxing color. As a matter of fact some jail cells are painted pink to help prisoners relax. And that relaxation will last for about ½ hour after leaving the cell! A brown dining room gives the feeling of warmth and comfort and has a strong association with food…brown eggs, cereal, brown bread, etc. A red dining room will stimulate the appetite and is why red is used in many restaurants.

Choose colors wisely. This story about color should help. A friend asked me to speak with their friend about a problem with choosing colors. As we talked I learned that her son would come into the house calmly; but become very agitated after being inside. I asked her the color of the hallway. She said it was red. Reds look great but can have a negative effect on hyper active children. The hallway was re-painted and the agitation changed.

An environment can make your home a very comfortable place for you, your family and guests. This is where people feel very relaxed and at ease. It is a place to escape the turmoil of life and kick back and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Consider the people living in the house and any issues or problems. And; let everyone choose the colors they like to make it a family event.

Built-ins may be too expensive, and computer armoires won’t be a good investment because they usually don’t contain enough work surface. A modular office-furniture system, which typically includes desks, computer tables, bookshelves, and file cabinets, is the most affordable option.

Glass and ceramic jars work well for pens and pencils. For personal papers, mail, stationery and magazines, use magazine holders in a color that ties in with the surrounding decor. Add pictures or business posers to the walls so he office area doesn’t appear to stark and un-inviting.

Look in your garage to see if there’s an underutilized area to store extra supplies. Low cost copiers and fax machines, sometimes integrated into an all in one machine with a flatbed scanner and color printer, have enabled the home office to become an efficient and productive place to work. Many of us can now work at home part of the time, and save commuting time and energy costs in the bargain!

Above all; dress like a professional. If you dress like you are hanging out at a gym you will be tempted to lounge around and not get much done. You are in a work environment and will be tempted to take a break and watch some TV. Remember; you can’t do those things when working in a business building. So why would you do it when you have your own business? You shouldn’t. Be professional at all times when working in your office. Dressing in work clothes creates a professional atmosphere.

Why do we choose particular colors for our home? It is because we either like them or have seen them in a magazine or someone’s home. Most times it is because we have a favorite color deep in our mind and may not even be aware of it. But, some of us have trouble deciding on which colors we really want to use in our own home. So, what do you do?

Let’s take it step-by-step:

1. Look around the room and see if there is a color you like in the items present.

2. Take the item (or a sample) to the paint store and choose some color samples that work with your item.

3. Tape the samples to the wall in the room you want to paint.

4. If you are happy with the sample you should only purchase a quart at this time. Why? It is hard to make a decision from a small paint sample. Or, ask the paint store if they can provide larger paint samples.

5. Paint a 5′ x 5′ square and live with it for a few days or more. Now you can place other items and fabrics near the color to see how they coordinate. Also, you can view the color during the day and at night when colors change due to the lighting.

6. If you’re satisfied you can purchase the paint, pick the sheen and paint the walls!

Also, paint sheen is another decision, but easy one to make. The sheens are as follows and are usually dictated by the room’s use:

? Flat has no shine and it hides imperfections on the walls. But, it is harder to clean than satin or semi-gloss.

? Satin or eggshell have a very soft sheen. But can be cleaned easier than flat.

? Semi-gloss has a shiner finish and can be cleaned much easier. So, it is good for high traffic areas such as kitchen and bathrooms. But, also emphasizes imperfections.

? Gloss is the shiniest and best to clean, but it emphasizes the imperfections the best.

OK, now that we got past that, you want to know “Do colors really reflect our personalities?” Why don’t you decide for yourself? Below is a list of colors and their respective personality traits.

Yellow = Idealist, Self-fulfillment, Lofty dreams.
Green = Moral, Balance, Caring companion.
Blue-Green = Sensitive, Exacting and sensitive.
Blue = Secure, Conservative, Trusting and loyal friend.
Purple = Polite, Vain and non-impressionable.
Lavender = Social, Civilized and neat.
Brown = Dependable, Conservative by nature.
Red = Aggressive, Vigorous, Impulsive in your mood and actions.
Burgundy = Ambition, Conscience and strength.
Pink = Romantic, Charm, Softness and warmth.
Orange = Adventuress, Good-natured and charming.
White = Simplicity, Neat and immaculate.
Gray = Cautious and non-committal.
Black = Dignified, Sophisticated and mysterious.

However, don’t run out and buy the color that matches your personality if you already have colors in your home. These personalities are just a non-scientific way to look at colors and how and why people choose them. But, keep in mind that some colors don’t work in all rooms; so be careful how you choose them.

Home Design Sense – How Lighting Effects Colors in Your Home

Have you ever wondered why colors look different in your home? Simple.

Lighting in the paint store is not the same as in your home. Your windows bring in light and your light bulbs are different. Even against other colors; color can change. Take a paint sample home and see the difference.

Lighting effects colors in the way that they absorb; or reflect light. Some colors will appear warmer in natural light, brighter in florescent light and toned down in incandescent lighting.

Light colors reflect; while dark colors absorb the lighting. Of course, everyone has a different opinion on whether light or dark colors make a room look smaller or larger. What’s your thought? Think about this. If you look at a black ceiling can you really tell where it ends?

Keep this in mind when planning the lighting in your home. Yeah; another thing to think about.

* Incandescent (bulbs) – This light enhances yellow and orange. While it dulls blue and violets. Red takes on an orange tint.

* Florescent (tube) – Invigorates green, blue and violet hues; but it washes out red, yellow and orange shades.

* Natural (outside or man-made lights) – This is the best, but not always practical light for the home. Reds warm and yellows tone down; while blues brighten and greens darken.

Lighting is not the only thing affecting colors. Ever wonder why colors look different when placed next to each other? It has to do with light wavelengths, but that is more scientific so, we will stay clear of that and make it easier to understand.

In plain language, colors can change radically when they are viewed next to another color. Try it at home to see the effect. Or try it with some paint swatches by putting them together.

Red next to blue – Red takes on a yellowish tint.
Red next to green – Red appears brighter and stronger.
Red next to yellow – Red seems bluer.
Red next to black – Red appears duller.
Red next to white – Red seems brighter and lighter.

Also, opposite (on the color chart/wheel) colors attract such as:

Red is redder when it’s with green.
Yellow is sharper when it’s with purple.
Blues becomes bluer when it’s with orange.

Keep this in mind if you have two or more colors that will be next to
each other. Always put the two colors together and view in the lighting
that you have in your home – during the day and at night.

Here is a list of the warm and cool colors:

* Warm Colors – Red, red-orange, orange, yellow-orange and yellow-greens.

* Cool Colors – Green, blue-green, blue, blue-purple and red-purples.

Always remember…view the color samples at home in the room they will be used. You will be surprised. View during the day and evening. Leave the swatches on the walls for a few days or longer if you are not sure. Oh, yes…use removable tape (blue or purple) if you are leaving them on for some time. You don’t want to mar the wall when removing the tape.

Then, before buying gallons of paint; purchase a quart or if they sell the small paint samples and paint a 6′ x 6′ square are and feather out the edges so you don’t have a hard line. Why? Because those small swatches don’t give a wide viewing area and to be absolutely sure you love the color before spending lots of money on gallons of paint.

Interior Home Design – Sell Your House With Home Staging

Home staging is the proven way to sell your house quicker and at a better price…even in today’s poor market. Home staging makes your house more competitive by presenting the house as “ready-to-move-in” to prospective buyer’s. And; home staging can be a way to get more organized and de-cluttered. This applies to both inside and out of the home.

Staging can be simple or more work and could require the help of a professional home stager. But; in some cases you can do it yourself if it is a simple project.

The first step is to look around each room. Bring a note pad with you if you are serious about doing this. Make notes about any problem items; such as broken doors, light switches. Yes; the ‘honey do’ type list, but it gets much more detailed as you go.

Now look inside the closets. Yes; buyers look in closets to see if there is enough room. Mark in your pad whether the closet is neat or packed and needs some thinning out.

Bathroom is the next stop. Any broken tiles, dripping faucets, etc? Also is there any areas that need to really be cleaned? Look at this as though you were buying.

The kitchen is an important area. Is it cluttered with items all over the counters? Are the cabinets messy and over flowing? Clear out the items you don’t use on a regular basis. Store them where you can get to them; but not clutter a cabinet in doing so.

Look around the living and dining rooms. Clean up as much clutter and items you don’t use daily. Clean out he display case of any items that are not “display casable”.

The garage is another place that gets cluttered very quickly. If you get a hold on it before it gets too cluttered you will be ahead of the game. If you are beyond that you may want to do a little at a time to make it easier on yourself. A cluttered garage can create an issue for buyers. You want to have the garage clear so they can determine what vehicle(s) will fit and how much room they have for their belongings.

Curb appeal is just as it sounds. An appeal of your house from the curb view. What do you see when you look at your house from the curb? Peeling pain, a broken mailbox, dead plants, etc? You will be surprised at how different the house will look once you make the effort to clean up the yard. Take a drive past your house and see what needs to be changed or repaired. And; don’t forget the back yard. This is a particular area where buyer’s like to see how they will use it – especially if they have children. So this area needs a special cleaning.

Staging is just making your home more presentable to yourself and/or prospective buyers. To make it easier on yourself; just make a list of the items that need to be fixed, repaired or cleaned and do it a little at a time.

Ask yourself this question: Would you buy a house that needed a lot of work; unless you were a handyman?

Curtains are a fast way to bring new life and color to any room, and now home decorators can create them more quickly and easily than ever.
